Custom SharePoint Apps Using Microsoft 365

The post covers the steps to start created custom SharePoint apps using Microsoft 365, for people, like me, that don’t have Microsoft Server installed at home and/or a Visual Studio license. The only requirement of this process is that you have a Microsoft 365 account with one of the following subscription plans:

  • Office 365 Midsize Business
  • Office 365 Enterprise E1, E3, E4, or K1
  • Office 365 Education A2, A3, or A4
  • Office 365 Government G1, G3, G4, or K1

Sorry small business accounts.

The next step is to create a developer site. Follow the instructions here:

Then you’ll want to open your site, and it should look something like this:

SharePoint App Dev Site

Click the Build an App icon to get started, and if you’re like me (a first-timer) you’ll be redirected to a page to install the Napa Office 365 Development Tools:

Napa Office 365 Development Tools

Click Add It to add it, and then confirm by clicking Continue:

Add App Confirm

Then we’ll return to our site to start playing 🙂
